Vol.05 "The Power of Youth: Work Fair" Held

Some of you may have seen a poster with a picture of Audrey Hepburn in the Tokyo subway station or at the bus stop. This is the poster for the "Power of Youth: Work Fair" held on November 25 and 26, 2005. It's hard to believe, but the Pasona Group is going to celebrate its 30th anniversary in February 2006. To commemorate this, we held this event to extend more and more support to the youth of Japan who shoulder the nation in the future, and to provide them the opportunity to have hopes and dreams.

The event included proposals to the issue of NEETs and Freeters ? young job-hopers among part-time jobs, introduction of the Pasona Group's employment infrastructure for the youth, career counseling, emotional intelligence diagnosis, live music performances, samples of vegetables grown at Pasona O2, and more.

Through the Fair, we wanted to create a chance for the youth to meet people who are on career paths, so that younger people might find something required for a member of the society. By listening to stories by people who are challenging actively with clear intension in many different areas, we hoped that younger people would find the value in working.

We had lectures: "The Power of Youth ? Don't Get Trapped By Stereotypes! True Stories About Work" by Tokyo University Assistant Professor Yuji Genda who is passionately working on NEETs and Freeters, "The Paths To A Career In Sports," and "Make Your Dreams Come True! Becoming An Entrepreneur."
Other lectures, which encouraged participation, were: "Techniques For Finding a Job and Changing Jobs And Business Manners To Make People Like You," "How To Get Interviewers On Your Side," "Useful Ways For Selecting A Job In Your Twenties," "Make Color A Weapon - Personal Color Lecture."
For people interested in more specialized topics: "The Choice to Work In Global Business," "Work That's Fun! Making a Career Plan," "Advice on Changing Jobs," "Careers to Success in the IT and Internet Business," and many more. All lectures were said to be very useful and practical.

We also held a symposium titled "Agriculture is a Venture!" which turned out very well, thanks to participation by the actor Toshiyuki Nagashima, Masaaki Kobayashi of Kanon-Saien truck farm who kindly accepted the first Pasona agriculture interns, and the writer Yoshimi Ishikawa who wrote his experiences on a strawberry farm in the US in "Strawberry Road".
And, the "Find a Job Rally" ? a job finding game where players experience almost all what they will do in actual job finding ? attracted many young people there.

What Assistant Professor Genda of Tokyo University said is: “Waver and Flounder a bit about what to do. After that, pick a path daringly and follow it.” He took as an example Taro Okamoto, an artist famous for his energy and passion, who chose the path of higher risk when he was in doubt which to take. My philosophy has been, “When in doubt, try first” since I started business. As my life is only once, I do try when I waver in judgment whatever it may be.

A Yomeigaku scroll at the Shokason-juku reads: "Knowing is the beginning of doing, and doing is the completion of knowing. If you do not do, you cannot say that you know. If you know but do not do, this is the same as not knowing. Knowing, and doing ? this is true wisdom and knowledge." I want people to put to use in society what they have learned. Working is the best way to express yourself.

The event hall was so filled with young people that not a few saw standing. Professor Genda thought together with the young people, and spoke from their point of view.

Over 3,000 ? students who were going to start job finding, and young people who entered the work one or two years ago ? attended the Work Fair. I hope that they found a dream and the will to work at theFair, reconsidered what it is to work, and encouraged them to follow their true paths. Thanks to everyone who came.
